NATIONAL ZOO KEEPER WEEK
JULY 16 – JULY 22

The American Association of Zoo Keepers San Diego Chapter is joining forces with the San Diego Zoo, the San Diego Zoo’s Safari Park, and SeaWorld San Diego to celebrate this year’s annual National Zoo Keeper Week, July 16 through July 22.

During this week, keepers and animal care staff will be recognized for their work in the animal care field. As you know, zoo keeping does not just involve cleaning up after animals. In today’s zoos and animal facilities, keepers are involved in behavioral observations, medical care, research, training, enrichment and conservation as a part of the day to day animal care.

During National Zoo Keeper Week, zoo keepers and animal care staff are celebrated and recognized by the institutions they work in. The San Diego Zoo, San Diego Zoo Safari Park and the American Association of Zoo Keepers San Diego Chapter (AAZK San Diego) have various activities planned throughout the week for their animal care staff and members.

We encourage guests to speak to and learn from animal care staff and to see what is involved in daily zoo keeping. There are different kinds of keepers found at the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park such as mammal, bird, reptile, hospital, and insect keepers. Each has a unique and fascinating job. Other animal care professionals include trainers, researchers, and vet technicians. All these people are dedicated to animal care and conservation inside and outside of their jobs. Ask them what they do in their “spare time” and most will tell you about a conservation project they are raising funds for, a habitat clean-up they are involved in, or an animal rehabilitation they are helping with. They are truly dedicated to their profession.

This national celebration is in recognition of zoo keepers, aquarists, and all the animal care professionals in our nation’s zoological parks and aquariums. Zookeepers serve as animal care experts, frontline educators, and conservationists. We are proud to have zookeepers recognized for the important work they do on behalf of wildlife and conservation.

Created by AAZK, Inc, National Zoo Keeper Week is celebrated each year beginning on the third Sunday in July. During the week, zoos nationwide honor animal care professionals and the work they do in animal care, conservation, and education. There are over 6,000 animal care professionals in the United States.

To help increase public awareness about the need to preserve our precious habitats and the animals which inhabit them and to recognize the roles that zookeepers play in animal conservation and education, the American Association of Zoo Keepers invites zoos, aquariums, and their guests to participate in National Zoo Keeper Week.

AAZK began in San Diego in 1967 with the purpose of promoting professionalism in zoo keeping through education of zoological staff members in the most modern and current techniques of captive exotic animal care.
