AAZK San Diego’s 2017 Shirley Busch Professional Development Grant will be open for applications starting January 1, 2017 through February 8th for participation in projects occurring between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2017. A reminder that all applicants must be both a local and national AAZK member.

January 15, 2017: The 2017 Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon and Half will be taking place on Sunday, January 15, 2017 and AAZK San Diego will be volunteering on the course again to cheer on runners. We are looking for volunteers and also charity runners! If you are interested in volunteering or registering for the race and raising money for the AAZK San Diego chapter, please let us know by emailing to

February 27, 2017: AAZK Presents Painted Dog Conservation with Dr Rasmussen. Painted Dog Conservation was originally established as Painted Dog Research in 1992 by Gregory Rasmussen. Dr. Rasmussen is wildlife conservation biologist who has studied the African wild dog for over twenty years, working in the Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. He is the founder and director of the Painted Dog Conservation Project. Location: SD Zoo Otto Center Classroom. Time: 4:30 pm social, 5:00 pm presentation. This is a free event! Painted Dog Flyer

March 23, 2017: Beers for a Porpoise Faced with extinction, March has been named international Month of the Vaquita and 2017 has been named Year of the Vaquita. Proceeds from this fundraiser will aid the community-based conservation work being done by Ridge to Reef in support of the vaquita. The event will feature a raffle and auction with unique items and gift certificates. Participants will receive a free pint glass and free pint of beer with every paid ticket and food will be available for purchase.

May 1, 2017: BFR Committee meeting. We are getting ready for BFR on May 20th. We’ll be at our storage unit at 3:00 pm putting baskets together. Let us know if you’d like to help us out by emailing Yvette at

May 10, 2017. AAZK San Diego Meeting. All our meetings are open to anyone who would like to attend. Where: SDZoo Warner Board Room. Time: 5:00 pm. Email for more information.

May 20, 2017: Bowling for Rhinos may be months away, but we’re working on getting online fundraising set up for you early! Get a jump on earning one of the top fundraiser spots and consider the gift of charitable giving to BFR 2017 this holiday season! registration begins March 5th!

July 13, 2017: AAZK San Diego Meeting. Open to all. Join us at The Rose, 2219 30th St., SD 92104 and learn what’s coming up in your local AAZK Chapter. Time: 5:00 pm.

July 18, 2017: Lemur Love Fundraiser. Lemur Love is a non-profit organization who’s mission is to inspire love for lemurs through advancing knowledge and supporting action so Madagascar’s wildlife and people thrive.
There are approximately 130 species of lemurs and all are threatened or in danger of extinction. Lemur Love targets the 3 main threats to lemur survival (the illegal pet trade, the bushmeat trade, and habitat destruction) and raises awareness through educational programs and implementing alternative means of economic development.
AAZK San Diego is excited to be able to support Lemur Love’s efforts and we invite you to join us at a fundraiser to benefit our prosimian friends.

July 21, 2017: NZKW Bonfire. Anza Cove, 3000 N. Mission Bay, SD 92109. Join us for s’more and fun as we close-out this year’s National Zoo Keeper Week. Click here for details.

July 22, 2017: Photography Workshop. AAZK San Diego is partnering with ‘Focus on the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park’ photography group to offer a chance to learn more about photography! You’ll receive tips on topics like framing, lighting, and proper equipment use. Click here for details.

August 30, 2017: Cocktails for Conservation. Join AAZK San Diego as we eat, drink and be merry for conservation at Kindred (1503 30th Street, in San Diego’s South Park area) from 4:00 pm until closing. AAZK San Diego will receive 15% of all sales that will go directly to help us with the various conservation efforts we support throughout the year. Click here for the flyer.

October 2, 2017. Action for Cheetahs in Kenya. Guest speaker Mary Wystera will give us an update of ACK’s work. Time: 2:00 – 4:00 pm. Location: San Diego Zoo’s Otto Center. More details to come.

October 19, 2017: Croctober Fest with Costume Contest. This year’s fundraiser will benefit the African Dwarf Crocodile. Location: Bay City Brewing Co., 3760 Hancock St., SD 92110. There will be a silent auction, food trucks, a coloring contest for kids, and more. Cost: $10 per ticket. More info to come.
